A study from Families USA in June 2004 revealed that nearly one of three people under the age of 65 in the state of Colorado is uninsured (32.1%)1. Over 84% of those uninsured reside in working households. These are families living paycheck to paycheck, unprepared for an emergency or catastrophic illness. Studies have shown that over 66% of uninsured persons will remain uninsured for over 6 months1. Many of these households' earnings exceed the qualifying limit for state assistance, but not enough to afford private insurance. The trade off of insurance versus food for the family leads to a decision to ignore symptoms. The end result is delaying or even ignoring detection of disease, thereby decreasing chances for survival.
Finding a lump in the breast, with no insurance prevents a visit to the doctor, because, even though 90% of lumps found early are benign, if malignant, constitutes a pre-existing condition, and uninsurable, and perceived by the patient as a death sentence, with no hope and no help.
That is why the education component, and awareness of The Mickaela Foundation itself, is equally as important as the treatment funds provided. When the patient is aware there are funds available to them for treatment, and early detection can mean a long-life well lived, new options emerge. The Mickaela Foundation's purpose is simple, education and funding. The battle song is Don't Panic! There is help and there is hope!
Why Mickaela?
The vision of Mickaela Earle-Ross was to offer hope and financial support to women suffering the devastating effects of breast cancer and breast cancer treatment. After Mickaela succumbed to breast cancer in 2001, the Foundation named for her was founded, bringing Mickaela's vision to reality. The Mickaela Foundation's 2008 goal for patient treatment funds is 150; so far this year we are averaging 10 to 15 applications per month.
The mission of the Mickaela Foundation is to provide financial assistance for uninsured breast cancer patients in Colorado with outstanding medical debt resulting from a breast cancer diagnosis.
The Medical Bill Assistance Program: Funding up to $1000 toward outstanding medical bills for post-surgical treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, bone scans, etc. Applicants may re-apply as often as needed. Re-funding is not guaranteed, but will be considered on a funds-available basis, with priority given first-time eligible applicants. Payments are sent directly to the care provider after verification and confirmation.
How We Receive Funding
The Mickaela Foundation receives funding from individuals and corporations as contributions, event participation and sponsorship as well as privately organized fundraising events. The Mickaela Foundation does not receive funding from government grants or support from Komen or Avon.

The March was started in 2006 by The St. Louis Youth Group in Louisville (above). After years of participating with the Yellow Team, they chose to do something different that would raise funds for local uninsured breast cancer patients instead of the larger generalized walks. Enjoy the innagural year (2006) photos ...
So they donned their Yellow Team shirts early one Sunday morning and 85 individuals marched a 5K through the streets of Louisville. The kids rallied to raise over $2100, but more importantly, they created something bigger than us and bigger than themselves.
The Mickaela Foundation has taken this gift and run with it, and this year we invite everyone to come and join us in making a stand for the uninsured cancer patient in Colorado. The festivities will begin as we open registration and check in at 7:30am at Louisville Community Park at Belle Vista Drive and County Road in Louisville.

Next year's March will also be held at Louisville Community Park at County Road & Bella Vista in Louisville. (MAP) We offer two Marches; The Stroll, a short jaunt around the park's perimeter (about 1 mile or so) or the Trail March, about a 5K along the Coal Creek Trail from Bella Vista up to St. Andrews and back around to the Park. They are both nice, happy, easy walks with beautiful scenery. Click here for our March Routes.
