The Mickaela Foundation provides treatment funds for uninsured breast cancer patients in Colorado

The Mickaela Foundation has closed as an non-profit organization providing financial assistance, but we will continue to use this site to provide informational resources for ALL cancer patients and uninsured Colorado citizens.

A Response to USPSTF 2009 Revised Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations:
The New Study/Report on Mammograms and Self Breast Examination Effectiveness: (read it for yourself)

My initial response: "Are they insane?"

I recently read the President of NBCC, Fran Visco's emailed response to the report (click here to read the Myths & Truths article). While I understand and appreciate what she is saying as far as breast cancer facts and myths, anything that assists in early-detection, thereby saving lives is always the best answer.

Please do not cancel your mammograms or biopsy based on a report from those who do not know you, or your specific situation.

The survival rate of breast cancer patients has steadily increased over the past decade, and I credit early detection and mass awareness. The people that are less likely to have access to early-detection measures (uninsured and under-insured), are still dying from breast cancer because they are being diagnosed in later stages, reducing their treatment options.

As far as the "age recommendation"; In the final 2 years of The Mickaela Foundation, over 80% of our treatment funds went for patients under 40, and only 10% of patients, throughout our entire 8 years were over 60 years old. Our average age throughout the 8 years was 37 years old!

I would not like to see this report become the battle cry of the insurance companies as they try to limit who and what they will cover as the "reform hammer" comes down. Additionally losing any more services for the uninsured, underinsured and now, under-aged is 100% unacceptable.

Get active, read everything, and make your voice heard! Your life, or the life of a loved-one may one day depend on it!

Good Health,
Martine Reeh
